ABOUT KANNADA

The Kannada script is a dynamic and visually distinctive writing system used primarily for the Kannada language, spoken predominantly in the Indian state of Karnataka. Tracing its origins to the ancient Brahmi script, the Kannada script began to take its current form around the 5th to 7th centuries CE. Its unique rounded shapes and elaborate character forms evolved from earlier scripts to meet the needs of writing on palm leaves, which favored a more fluid and less angular style. The script is an abugida, where each consonant inherently carries a vowel sound that can be altered with various diacritics. Over the centuries, the Kannada script has been instrumental in documenting the rich literary and cultural heritage of Karnataka, encompassing classical literature, religious texts, and modern works.
